Lawn Care For Cold New England Weather
Have you worked all year to maintain lush green grass? If your backyard (or front yard) is where you go to relax, unwind, and/or entertain, you’ll want to continue caring for your lawn through the second half of 2022 to keep it healthy. For the best fall lawn maintenance practices, check out our cold weather lawn care tips below.
Cut the lawn short
You should continue to mow the lawn until it stops growing. However, one trick we want to pass on is to lower the height of your lawn mower by a notch or two on the final few rounds of cutting your grass. Doing so decreases the chance of snow mold.
Overseed in the fall
A great tip is to overseed your lawn in the fall. Overseeding is the process of dispersing grass seed across your lawn to repair thin or bare areas, which in turn, makes it grow fuller and thicker. We recommend overseeding in the fall because grass seed can better return moisture during the cooler months.
Fertilize for protection
Fall is the perfect time to fertilize the lawn. Your grass will need a good dose of nitrogen to prepare it for the coldest months of the year. Fertilizing in the fall also aids in regenerating any roots that were affected by the hot summer weather while also fortifying the lawn before going dormant.
Aerate your lawn
Before winter hits, plan on aerating your lawn to keep it healthy for the spring. The process of aeration is beneficial because it helps the roots grow, which yields a fuller, thicker lawn when the warm weather picks back up.
Clean off all leaves and debris
To prep your lawn for the snow, make sure you rake or blow all the leaves, sticks, and debris off the grass. Remember to pick up any toys that may be laying around, too. Anything left on your lawn can trap moisture and smother the grass which can lead to harmful disease conditions.
