With warmer temperatures and blooming buds, spring has officially sprung here in New England.
If you’ve been wanting to create and maintain a thriving garden that brings life to your backyard all summer long, survives the heat, and adds a vibrant pop to your property, follow our 5 top gardening tips for a thriving garden this summer!
Don’t Overcrowd Plants
When planting flowers and plants in the gardens we care for, our number one tip is not to overcrowd plants! If you plan to plant a variety of flowers and plants in one bed, we recommend spreading each plant out the recommended distance.
It’s important for each plant to have enough room to grow and reach its full potential! Overcrowding can lead to poor air circulation and disease so it’s important to space out plantings to ensure they stay healthy and maintain this way even as they continue to grow.
Water Smart And Consistently
It’s no secret plants need sufficient water to survive, and in the summer heat, efficient watering is vital for thriving flowers. We make sure to deeply water our gardens daily whether that is with an irrigation system or a watering can.
It’s best to water plants early in the morning. By watering early morning and during the coolest part of the day, less water evaporation occurs and allows the plants to soak up as much water as possible. Make sure you give your garden beds a ‘deep’ water to ensure the water source is reaching the roots!
Deadhead To Rebloom
Cutting back and deadheading spent blossoms and buds is an important step our fine gardening team always has on our to-do list. If blooms are wilted and/or dying, deadheading will promote reblooming and continuous growth.
Deadheading plants will also allow the plant or flower to bloom longer! It encourages optimal flowering performance and will keep the plant looking healthy and clean while you wait for the next round of blooms. This is an important task to do throughout the entirety of the plant’s season.
Make Sure To Mulch
Fresh mulch is a crucial step and offers many benefits for gardens! A fresh layer of mulch helps cool down the soil and protect the plant roots from the scorching summer heat or those cold summer days. It conserves moisture and evaporation of water, prevents weeds from taking over, and is an extra layer of protection for gardens.
Mulching also helps with the overall erosion and compaction of the garden soil. As it mulch decomposes over the seasons, it will add much-needed nutrition to the soil. When these nutrients break down, it will improve soil structure and provide adequate drainage.
Mulching will also help prevent weeds from sprouting by blocking their access to sunlight. Additionally, mulching adds a manicured look to the garden, so it’s best to never skip mulching when gardening!
Supplement With Fertilizer
Just like us, plants need food! But, we call their food, fertilizer. A weekly or bi-weekly schedule of supplementing your plant’s water with fertilizer will ensure your plants are strong and healthy.
Fertilizer enrichens the soil and provides a boost of energy to these flowers as they work hard to make your yard look beautiful. Fertilizer delivers special nutrients to the plants to improve and encourage their continuous growth. It’s a healthy way to make sure your gardens are performing their very best!
