NALP Announces Top 10 U.S. Cities for Weeds, Lawn Disease in 2018

The National Association of Landscape Professionals made an announcement on National Lawn Care Month concerning the top 10 U.S. cities that are anticipated to be affected most by the growth of weed and disease in both spring and summer seasons.

The vice president of public affairs, NALP, Missy Henriksen said healthy lawns are vital for families, communities, and also the environment.

Heat and poor drainage can support the spread of red thread in this region. There are predictions that Cleveland will have above average temperatures. This, coupled with increased levels of precipitation can create the conditions for dollar spot, red thread, and several weeds to thrive.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Weather forecasters expect warmer temperatures and higher levels of precipitation in this region. This combined with late winter and early spring snowfall that added extra moisture to the soil will make this area especially prone to crabgrass and spotted surge.

Boston, Massachusetts

Since this region has experienced late winter and early spring snowfall, crabgrass and spotted surge is expected to pose a threat. Also, the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions are anticipated to experience higher temperatures and above average precipitation, making the problem worse.

Detroit, Michigan

Increased temperatures and extra rainfall expected in this region will make black medic that resembles clover and indicates imbalances in the soil and similar other weeds especially problematic in the Detroit.

Wichita, Kansas

Dandelions that are a healthy soil may become a nuisance for the Wichita area in as the average rainfall will create perfect conditions for growth. White grubs nourish on grassroots and can bring wide damage to lawns.

Seattle, Washington

The Pacific Northwest has experienced cool, wet and windy spring. Moss thrives in these conditions and can starve grass of its necessary nutrients. Also, expect dandelions which thrive in the same conditions to start sprouting later in the spring and into the summer when the temperatures are warmer than usual.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Increased temperatures will make crabgrass and spotted spurge flourish in this region this summer.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The forecast for average temperatures and lower than average precipitation will make crabgrass and spotted spurge flourish.
